The latest statistics are alarming. The World Health Organization recently published some numbers: more than eight million people worldwide are addicted to heroin, thirteen million to cocaine. One hundred and fourty million people use marijuana and hashish. It is estimated that two thousand people die every day from tobacco-related illness. Need smaller numbers to grasp the problem? The Los Angeles Times has reported that eleven young people in an affluent Dallas suburb have died of heroin since 1996 .

The Essential Teachers Handbook on Substance Abuse

Why? Were those middle-class kids really aware of the dangers of heroin use? Did they know what that drug would do to their bodies? Would as many millions of people use drugs if they could see what actually happens to their brain when they do? To their heart, lungs and reproductive organs? To their future children? In order to combat the devasting effects that substance has on our society we must raise awareness by extending our focus beyond the statistics and back to the individual. For, though the destruction takes place within the individual so also does the power to change.
